IRS & State Levies/Garnishments of Wages and "Other Income"

Both the IRS and State of Michigan frequently use wage garnishments to collect taxes owed through your employer. Once filed, the employer is required to collect a portion of each paycheck and a large percentage of taxpayer's wages will be turned over directly to the IRS or the State. The wage garnishment stays in effect until the tax is fully paid or until the IRS or the State agrees to release the levy.
Many of our clients turn to us for emergency help to stop wage garnishment. Our firm knows how potentially devastating a wage garnishment is to taxpayers and their families and understands the importance of a regular paycheck. Upon being retained we will immediately contact the IRS or the State to negotiate the release of the wage garnishment. Of course, releasing or lowering a wage garnishment is only a temporary solution; follow up by developing a long-term strategy for dealing with your liability. Once the wage garnishment is released, we will either set up a repayment plan or submit an Offer in Compromise for our clients.
In addition to wage garnishments, both the IRS and State of Michigan may seize other sources of income payable to you. Examples of other levy sources include commissions, sub-contractor fees, and accounts receivable for self-employed individuals; bank and brokerage accounts (see "IRS Bank Levies" under Services), life insurance or endowment contracts; and in certain situations, retirement benefit payments including Social Security Retirement benefits, Medicare payments and Veteran's Pension benefits.
Bottom line, if you owe the IRS or State of Michigan and do not take a proactive approach to the resolution of your tax liabilities, they can pursue collection enforcement against many different sources of income payable to you.
